NASA WHITE SAND TEST FACILITY (WSTF) April 2017- To Date
Test Engineer
- Developed algorithm using visual basic for applications for calculating the gun’s powder load. The program takes into account variables like muzzle size, Sabot OD, Piston Mass, Gun Barrel Erosion, and Launch Package Mass. This program helped to dramatically increase the percentage of acceptable testing from 75% to 95%.
- Developed a Machine Learning Algorithm using Python and libraries such as Pandas, Numpy, and Scikit-learn. The program is constantly getting smarter and filters only usable shots. The model was built by using the K Nearest Neighbors Regression Theory and considers data like barrel erosion, Sabot OD, Muzzle Size and LP Mass. This model currently has and accuracy of 96% and should reach a 100% by the time we collect plenty of quality data.
- Developed algorithm that automatically tracks the inventory of the gun-consumables. The program automatically subtracts the parts that were used on each shot. This is a time saver and helps to prevent miscounting of the inventory.
- Improved manufacturing process for gun pistons. HDPE has a very large coefficient of thermal expansion and it becomes very difficult to keep the desired tolerances due to heating during machining. Convective cooling has helped to have a better temperature control and keep the correct tolerances. Having a significant variation on the pistons’ masses was a common problem; therefore, the new process incorporates a scale in order to keep the piston mass constant. This helps to have a better control over the projectiles velocity.
- Improved Software for making Sabot Blueprints. The new Sabot Design with rear serrations has been incorporated to the program.
- Created program that generates Customer ID numbers for customers. This program helps to keep a proper numerical sequence for all the shot programs.
- Developed a Sabot Structural Analysis Program that calculates the maximum bending and shear stresses exerted onto the Sabot during launch. This program is used to determine the proper sabot length based on the projectile size and material.
- Worked on proposal for developing new materials that could potentially be used for the Sabot. This would be a joint effort between WSTF and UTEP’s Keck Center.
- Designed and replaced gun bushings. Previous design used a metal-to-metal interface causing the pump tube to be eroded and damaged over time. In addition, many components were used making the previous design too complicated. The new design uses fewer parts and prevents pump tube damage.
- Developed algorithm that estimates the maximum allowable tungsten cube size that can be launched using the 1-Inch gun.
- Designed new BNC feedthroughs for future programs that require more connections.
- Installed and learned how to use the gun code developed at AMES for optimizing our two-stage gas guns.
- Developed a new program that can run the gun-code as many times as needed to create large data frames that can be used for DOE studies.
- Worked on study for optimizing the WSTF gun ranges. This study provides a new understanding of the gun and how to get higher velocities without increasing component erosion.
- Worked on study to prevent piston bounce back when a low velocity shot is attempted.
- Worked on finding new techniques to prevent CFRP projectile oblation. A study on high temperature coatings was presented.
- Worked on developing a form generator that creates a digital database for machine shop work and shipping.
- Worked on a structural analysis for shaped projectiles.
- Improved algorithm using visual basic for applications for calculating the gun’s powder. This program helped me to correctly estimate powder loads for the .50 and .17-Cal gun ranges. It is a rare occasion when a shot becomes unacceptable due to velocity issues.
- Responsible for preparing and organizing testing. Make sure we follow the correct procedures to prevent accidents and human errors.
- Responsible for assigning the proper Personal Protective Equipment for each shot depending on the Hazard Levels. Different PPE and adjustments to the procedures are used depending on what kind of target is being shot.
- Responsible for verifying that the shot meets the client and safety requirements.
- Responsible for making blueprints and detailed designs. Needs to make sure that drawings take full regard of all health and safety requirements.
- Constantly seeking ways to improve the gun acceptance ratio. Adjustments to the gun such as having a proper piston control helps to improve the overall gun efficiency.
- Always opened for input and have willingness to help the gunners with any problems they encounter. Ordering and making drawings for new gun parts is a common task.
- Responsible for monitoring gun inventory as well as heat treating gun parts that require stress relieving such as sabot blanks.
- Responsible for the outcome of shots. Decisions are taken based on engineering calculations rather than personal bias or emotional feelings.
- Responsible to deliver a clear message to the gunners about any modifications that need to be done on any gun-range.
- Responsible for leading shots and keeping the gunners active and motivated.
- Responsible of assisting the gunners with technical questions, engineering and designing of new parts. Always looking forward for new input to improve our current system.
- Responsible of finding more practical solutions to common problems.
- Responsible of supplying the team with all the necessary parts and tools to keep the gun operating at ideal conditions.
- Responsible for having a good and clear communication with the customers. Always make sure we satisfy the customer needs and ask questions when needed. Clients often requests changes and it is my obligation to make the necessary modifications and deliver the message to the team.
